Why no Palm Oil?

Most soapmakers, including most natural soapmakers use palm oil in their formulations. This is because palm oil is cheap and adds important qualities to the soap, such as hardness. Palm oil also makes a mild soap and we must admit that it’s preferable to beef tallow, a substance used in many commercial brands.

But palm oil has a downside that casts a big shadow. The production of palm oil contributes to the destruction of the rainforests, destroying the natural habitats of creatures as divine as the orang-utan. Even so-called sustainable palm oil is regarded as a greenwashed product. Greenpeace has investigated the palm oil industry and says they “found evidence that RSPO members are still relying on palm oil suppliers who destroy rainforests.” For more information about the issues surrounding the production of palm oil please visit the Greenpeace website page on Palm Oil.

We at Sebon Soaps have worked hard to develop our recipes and believe we have come up with soaps that because of the additional properties offered by the oils we use is superior to soaps made with palm oils (our regular customers seem to agree).

Caring for your Soap

Sebon soaps are natural products and can soften if left in a puddle of water on the sink. Our soaps should be kept as dry as possible between uses. A soap dish that drains away the excess water is a good idea. One of our customers gave us a brilliant tip – allegedly originating from a Kenneth Williams Carry On film, that is to simply rest the soap on an upside-down nail brush, a bonus is that your nail brush is always loaded and ready to go.
